MICRO-WHAT?
MICROBIOMES
What a funny word. Puts me in mind of tiny little cartoon buggies running around our guts.
Actually, did you know that we are MORE “buggies” (bacterial cells) than we are human cells?
The same applies to our horses.
So what, you ask?
I’ll tell you what — those microbiome buggies are the little critters that keep us healthy!
Over 80% of the immune system lies in the gut … in these little gut buggies. And THAT is a HUGE deal!
Our bodies and our horses’ bodies are full of trillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi. They are collectively known as the microbiome.
Some of the bacteria is related to diseases while others are extremely important to the immune system and overall health.
In fact, there are more bacterial cells in your body than human cells. There are roughly 40 trillion bacterial cells in your body and only 30 trillion human cells. That means you are more bacteria than human (1, 2).
In fact, there are up to 1,000 species of bacteria in the human gut microbiome, and each of them plays a different role in your body. Most of them are extremely important for your health, while others can and do cause disease.
In the hindgut of a horse, changes in the bacteria levels through dietary disruption, seasonal changes, stress, or age can lead to colic and laminitis, causing lameness or even death in severe cases. In this study, we profiled bacterial communities from fecal samples collected and submitted by horse-owners participating in the Equine Microbiome Project (EMP) and correlated differences in community structure with feed type, specifically horses eating exclusively hay, pasture, a hay-concentrate mix, or a combination of pasture, hay, and concentrate as reported in EMP metadata surveys. –https://www.j-evs.com/article/S0737-0806(17)30256-3/abstract
So, I ask you – which kind of bacteria are you feeding YOUR HORSE? (Well, and yourself, too — after all, our horses needs their humans to be healthy in order to take care of them, right?)
A very wise man once stated, “All disease begins in the gut.” — Hippocrates
Well, that doesn’t include genetic diseases but we’re talking metabolics here.
Think of Cushings, Insulin Resistance, EMS, Auto-immune, Leaky Gut, and so many more chronic nasties. THESE are the types of diseases with which our domestic horses are challenged more and more each day.
This has a lot to do with the different gut bacteria residing in the digestive tracts, as well as the integrity of the gut lining (1).
According to numerous studies, unwanted bacterial products called endotoxins can sometimes “leak” through and enter the bloodstream (2).
When this happens, the immune system recognizes these foreign molecules and mounts an attack against them, resulting in a chronic inflammatory response (3).
Inflammation is the response of the immune system to foreign invaders, toxins or cell injury.
Suffice to say, diet-induced inflammation has been shown to trigger insulin resistance, leptin resistance (causing obesity), fatty liver disease, and has been strongly linked to many of the world’s most serious diseases (4, 5, 6)
Without going into much more detail and totally bogging down our minds, suffice to say that, once again, Hippocrates was right when he said,
“Let thy medicine be thy food and thy food be thy medicine.”
So now, you know what MICROBIOMES are, how they affect your horses’ overall health (and your own). I guess the question now arises as to … do you want to learn more?
The key questions being … What are you gonna do now that you know this?
Ask me about my WHOLE HEALTH for the WHOLE HORSE protocol.

🙂 — We are EXCITED to begin this new journey with PENZANCE Equine Integrative Solutions!
The Quiet Corner
PENZANCE Equine Integrative Solutions is now nestled in the “Quiet Corner” of CT.
A move from Douglas, MA to SW Florida did not pan out the way it was expected. Many factors played into the decision to move back to New England from FL but mostly health reasons for the horses and humans alike.
It was a good move.
PENZANCE now has the room to offer clinics and workshops covering WHOLE HEALTH for the WHOLE HORSE. Equine Natural Nutrition, Natural Balanced Hoofcare, Clicker Training, Faith-based Equine Assisted Personal Development as well as general Equine Connections are all part of what is to come in the spring of 2019. Plans are being put into place to host Guest Experts in the Equine Natural Care, as well. Stay Tuned!
In the meantime, while you are waiting for the exciting new events in 2019, Gwenyth Santagate, founder and owner of PENZANCE Equine Integrative Solutions, offers private and semi-private sessions in all of the above mentioned areas. If you would like to talk with Gwenyth or schedule an introductory appointment (or regular appoinment) please feel free to email to her: gwen.santagate@gmail.com or call her (860) 556-9199.
You are invited to also connect with Gwenyth on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gwenyth.santagate as well as through a number of PENZANCE Equine groups and pages.
Please — if you have particular workshops or clinics that you would like to see offered here in “The Quiet Corner” of CT, jot them down below in the comments and we’ll see what we can do.
Be blessed.

Gwen is a wonderful teacher. When I first got my horse Jigs, he was pushy and didn’t listen. After a few sessions with her, he became a barn favorite for his good manner and sunny personality.
Gwen trained me I think, not JIGS :). I highly reccomend her.

Owner, Horses Know the Way Home
Gwen,
What impresses me about you is, you look not only at the hoof but the whole horse and the whole horse environment. Who is the owner and where does the horse live and how are they treated and fed.
You stay on top of the the latest research and you follow up with pertinent information in a very timely fashion.

JOCELYNE, Quebec CAN
“… If it weren’t for you Gwen, my passion for horses would not have grown to what it is today. I started my online lessons with Gwen in 2008 and have taken many lessons with her. She really knows her stuff. My horse is healthy. My other horse, Corado, died of cancer at 18. He may not have lived as long if it weren’t for Gwen. Both of my horses never colicked, their feet were absolutely amazing (with Gwen’s guidance), never lame. … After 5 years of following Gwen’s method, I have proof that she knows her stuff (and if she doesn’t she’ll find the information). Love you Gwen. From Québec Canada”

RONN, New York :
Hi Gwen,
I first came to you because of my need to get ‘ real “ answers about natural hoof care. Your original Penzance website led me to enroll in your class Natural Hoof Care 101. I knew absolutely nothing at that time and had a horse that had recently foundered.
After working with you I working with you, I came away with the confidence that I had made the right decision to keep my horse as natural as possible, regardless of domestication.
I feel that overall your reasoning has been solid throughout the years and that is why I still call upon you as one of my two ” go to ” mentors regarding anything hoof. The other is K C LaPierre. Beyond the hoof, especially respecting nutrition, Gwen– u da girl !

JOAN, FL : ”My life and the health and vitality of all my animals has been forever transformed for the better. Thanks Gwen for all you give to all of us. You are a gifted healer and teacher.”

MA : Thank you Gwen, for your inspiring articles and ideas. Together with Mark Rashid, you are one of the greatest horsepersons of recent times.

VANESSA, NH :
“I would entrust the care and well-being of any horse, sound or lame, healthy or sick, troubled or at peace, to Gwen Santagate. I give her my highest recommendation because she is one of the most honest, wisest, and most circumspect people I have ever met. She goes the extra mile (or ten) for the horse’s sake and makes every animal’s total well-being her top priority. My horse recommends her, too -four hooves up! – because, thanks to her, and her alone, he is alive and well.”

Mutual or Fearful Respect?
Mutual respect or fearful respect? Which is it for you; for your horse?
When teaching children we try to have patience and be clear in our instructions. We keep our voices soft, our eyes, soft and our hearts compassionate.
When teaching horses we see alot of bats, whips, flags, chasing round and round, angry faces, incongruent body languages … all in the name of ‘natural horsemanship’.
Let me tell you what happens when you’re trying to ‘train’ a horse using forceful equipment and language … (meaning mind body and heart language)
Horses are meant to remember every single flight or fight moment … that is, whatever cause them to feel as if they need to flee, jump away, startle away – they remember.
Always.
That’s just simply the way their survival system is formed.
We humans are much the same.
PTSD = Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
This occurs from those momentary flight or fight events.
Every flight or fight event for the horse is woven into the tapestry of the brain … forever.
This response actually triggers a chain response in the brain and body.
It’s a ‘whole body’ response.
Never forgotten.
When a horse apparently ‘succumbs’ to a scary thing and ‘submits’ to the human causing the scary thing, the horse embeds a PTSD moment into his brain .. forever. And now, forever, he’ll try to avoid that PTSD moment, in some manner, out of fear.
Because the horse submits some say now the horse is ‘respectful’ or some say now the horse is ‘desensitized’.
But somewhere, sometime, somehow down the line, the horse will have a PTSD recurrance moment that is unconsciously connected directly to the initial ‘training’ moments that cause the PTSD in the first place.
This is not ‘respect’ when a horse responds to a harsh cue with, what seemingly appears to be, a ‘correct response’.
This is fear based reaction.
This becomes a classically conditioned response of fear.
A horse moves out of the human’s way as a response to being swatted on the face or neck with a hard, rubber bat. A horse swings its butt around to face the human to avoid being kicked in the hindquarters or whipped. The horse moves sideways to avoid the sting of a crop on its side. The horse goes into the trailer to avoid the ‘punishment’ of not going into the trailer.
The list goes on.
The horse is ‘obeying commands’ but not out of respect.
He’s “obeying” out of fear. He is AVOIDING pain, discomfort, fear.
PTSD is a funny thing .. for humans and for horses. It can rear its ugly head with a totally uncontrollable response and do so ‘out of nowhere’.
Not something anyone wants when riding or working around horses.
Horses that TRULY respect the human will try like crazy to avoid stepping on the human, running the human over … and will try like crazy to please the human; to get the ‘right’ answer. The horse will be bright and alert and happily engaged with the human as he is with a friend of his own kind. He will try to figure out what is being asked and willingly stay with the human to find out the answer.
Just like humans, horses want to feel ‘good’. They will repeat behaviors and try to recreate situations that made them feel good in the past.
Positive reinforcement goes a long, long way in teaching children AND horses …
Being *rewarded* for a “correct” response vs. being “punished” for the “wrong” response.
Is that how we teach our children?
Is that how you teach your horse?
If you’d like to learn more about positive reinforcement and how to create and develop a life-long lasting PARTNERSHIP with your horse, simply ask me.
I will help you. I will help your horse and together, as a team, we’ll make it happen.
